
5 Things / A Fair Share
This week I learned about a nonprofit organization near Seattle that established a minimum base salary of $70,000. This meant that some of the 24 employees received a $20,000 raise. Many years ago, I worked for nonprofit organizations, and I can say with confidence that valuing employees in this way will go a long way towards keeping them energized, especially since many of them are BIPOC and work two jobs.

Why & How to Share Gender Pronouns at Work
One of the ways people can be allies to transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming people is to proactively share their pronouns in their email signature and other places at work.

I've talked to a lot of people who were really disappointed in 2021, having entered it with such high hopes after the revolutionary DEI commitments to racial justice made in 2020. I understand that, in most organizations, the needle has barely moved in terms of diversity representation. My metric is a bit different, though.

This week I learned that Dictionary.com named Allyship its Word of the Year. The term had first surfaced in the mid-1800s, but was only added to Dictionary.com last month after a spike in searches for terms like "ally" and "alliance."
