5 things / #dontbanequality

This week I shared #1ThingILearnedToday on LinkedIn or Twitter each day. Here's my weekly summary of good news, especially related to inclusion:

#5ThingsILearnedThisWeek:

  • Over 200 companies (such as Bloomberg, M.A.C. Cosmetics, and Slack) signed on to #DontBanEquality to support comprehensive reproductive rights, including abortion coverage. This is in response to the recent legislation in a few states to restrict access.

  • In a first, a woman in a wheelchair won a Tony Award. Ali Stroker (who I remember from Glee) won for her incredible performance in Oklahoma! Unfortunately the Tony's did not include a ramp for her to get on stage, so she had to stay backstage in case she won, and couldn't join her castmates when the full production won later that evening.

  • Canada is the latest country to offer non-binary folks a third gender on their passport and official state documents. Non-binary Canadians can currently get their passport updated for free.

  • Target recently extended family medical leave coverage for all of its 350k employees, including retail workers who are hourly and part time. Those folks may now access up to 4 weeks of paid leave to care for a newborn or sick family member. Workers will also receive 20 days of included child care or elder care.

  • The Nike Store in London has a series of new mannequins representing diverse body types, including parasport and plus sized mannequins, showing that there's not one way to be athletic.
