5 things / Ecuador

Great news out of Ecuador! The country now officially offers marriages for same-sex couples, making it the 27th country in the world to do so.

In other news, a reminder that each weekday I share #1ThingILearnedToday on LinkedIn or Twitter. Here's the weekly summary of my favorite things I learned:

#5ThingsILearnedThisWeek:

  • Four players from the world champion U.S. Women's National Soccer team have started a gender neutral lifestyle brand, Re-Inc, which currently has some clothing items. Their goal is to embrace inclusivity and gender-neutral design.

  • The law firm Baker McKenzie has set ambitious goals for gender balance in leadership: 40% men, 40% women, and 20% flexible (men, women, and/or non-binary). Recruitment pools should achieve that balance in 2020 with firm-wide balance set for 2025.

  • Washington State's Supreme Court ruled that obesity is a disability and protected under ADA. This makes it illegal to discriminate towards someone who is obese in employment.

  • Harvard Business Review conducted a study at Wikipedia and found that politically diverse teams are more effective - as long as those individuals are still willing to be collaborative.

  • Will uniforms for front line employees start to be phased out or become more liberating? Employees who are given greater freedom of self-expression (including showing visible tattoos, fully expressing their personality, etc) have higher retention and customer satisfaction rates.
