5 Things / Shake it out

I’m currently taking an improv class, and it’s teaching me a lot about the energy we bring into a room before we even say a word.

I learned that some performers actually pre-plan their character’s emotions. They might decide, “This time, I’m bringing the energy of bravado,” and then they let the scene unfold from that feeling.

I’ve noticed that if I’ve had a "stiff" day, I carry that tension with me to class. That’s why we start by literally shaking out our bodies. It’s a physical way to shed the day and put on the "costume" of a joyful performer.

It hit me that leaders wear costumes, too. There’s the costume of the efficient meeting leader, the direct feedback-giver, or the empathetic manager. These may all be authentic versions of you – but they require different vibrations.

The mistake I’ve made is forgetting to "shake it out" between scenes. If you carry the intensity of a budget issue into a sensitive one-on-one, it’s noticeable. If we don't shed our own stress, we don't leave enough room for someone else’s truth.

I’ve realized that being an inclusive leader means being intentional about these transitions. It’s taking thirty seconds to pause and ask: Which version of me does this person need right now? How do you transition between the different roles you play? Do you have a ritual to "shake it out" before your next meeting?

I’ll be cheering you on-

This Week's Good Vibes:

Stitching skills, shifting culture

Levi’s partnered with Discovery Education to launch a free, standards-aligned high school curriculum teaching students how to sew on buttons, mend tears, and hem clothing by hand. 41% of Gen Z report no basic repair knowledge, while Americans send 2,100 pounds of textile waste into U.S. landfills every second. Framed as skills-based, career-ready learning rather than gendered home economics, the program challenges the disposable fashion mindset fueled by ultra-fast-fashion brands that disproportionately harms low-income communities and countries where clothing is manufactured and discarded. ♐️ Repair skills build agency and sense of value.

From trash bags to dignity

A new policy in New York requires that children entering or moving within foster care receive durable luggage instead of trash bags, mandating statewide distribution through the Children and Family Services. In 2023, New York had 14,723 children in foster care and more than 6,300 new entries and research shows up to 80% of foster care in general have significant mental health needs. It matters because how a child’s belongings are handled during removal sends a powerful message about their worth and can bring a little dignity. ♐️ Small policy shifts can restore dignity at scale.

Property rights, finally recognized

The Philippine Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex couples may be recognized as co-owners of property if both partners can prove financial contribution. Same-sex marriage remains illegal there. The court warned that failing to apply Article 148 would render “legitimate intimate relationships” legally invisible and urged lawmakers to also address broader rights gaps. This matters because property access affects economic security, healthcare decision-making, and stability for marginalized couples. ♐️ Legal interpretation can expand protections even when legislation lags.

Music, money, movement

Out singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile held a benefit concert (“joyful collective action”) in Minneapolis that raised $600,000 for families impacted by ICE’s occupation of the city that resulted in the deaths of at least two peaceful protestors and sparked sustained, peaceful demonstrations. My partner and I went to her Chicago show the night before and it was pure joy. Community-led, nonviolent protest paired with resource mobilization can shift public discourse and support families directly harmed by enforcement actions. ♐️ Culture plus collective action can move money, hearts, and policy conversations.

Europe affirms trans women are women

The European Parliament adopted a resolution, in a 340–141 vote, urging the European Union to “emphasize the importance of the full recognition of trans women as women” at the upcoming 70th session of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women. The resolution calls for equal access to protection and support services for trans women and includes explicit backing for LGBTIQ+ organizations, gender-sensitive mental health services, and protections for human rights defenders. Though nonbinding, the guidance is expected to shape the E.U.’s global advocacy. Trans women face disproportionate violence and exclusion, and policy language at international forums influences funding, protections, and legitimacy worldwide. ♐️ Clear policy language can shift global standards and signal who belongs.

Good Vibes to Go:

For those of you into HGTV-type shows, check out Homegrown on HBO. Hosted by urban farmer Jamila Norman, it’s a joyful, grounding series that helps families transform their yards into thriving food gardens while celebrating Black agricultural traditions and food justice. We love this show!
